- Robin comes from a rich family that's closely tied to the Syndicate in Ul'dah
- so he grew up privileged, popular, & naive to the many wrongdoings of Ul'dah's government & higher-ups until he was older
- because of his rich family, he has some of the best education the state has to offer & he was trained to use a sword -- although it was mostly for show
- after he turned 16, he discovered how corrupt the Syndicate his family made a living from was by the luck of an overheard conversation at home
- in response to that, he abandoned his privileged life that stood upon the backs of others less fortunate out of guilt & to attempt to make amends by forcing a change in the world
- suffice it to say, the years after were a struggle to survive to make sure he had a roof over his head or food in his stomach
- he was living the life of the people his family used on the streets, fighting for scraps, & he found they deserved better
- in his travels, he found new genuine beauty in the world that he was oblivious to in his affluent life & fell in love with the people that were good & kind
- & found pity in the ones that weren't, using others for their own gain
- as such, his desire to help each & every person who asked it of him was born
- or perhaps the latter was to offset some of the more nebulous back-alley contracts he's gotten involved in to change the wrongs he seeks to right
- either way, it leads him to enjoy what time he can find to relax, whether that's going out into the wild for his botany or cooking in his off time
- if that doesn't work (& it hasn't, more than he likes) he's taken up drinking & he can keep up with the lushest of Limsa pirates these days
- he calls Gridania his home city-state mainly because of Mother Miounne -- who was exceptionally kind & warm to him when he had no place to go
- though he's a mercenary of some renown, he hardly (if ever) keeps the gil he earns for himself
- enough is kept to stay afloat, but he donates most to the churches & establishments that help the less fortunate under an anonymous name
